The Carson City Library, A Trusted Place
by Sara Jones, Library Director

Public libraries play a critical role in access to
information and resources and the building of a strong and vital community.  They offer equal access to services regardless of a person’s personal economics. A library contributes to a community’s entire quality of life through programming that is critical for attracting new residents and businesses, but more importantly to support  those already located in Carson City.
Public libraries also help nurture early childhood learning and development, fostering the growth of the communities youngest residents.

Did you know last year more than a quarter of a million people took advantage of services at the Carson City Library? Last year the library checked out 278,071 books and 54,831 videos, DVDs and audio books.  There were 17,737 hours of use of the public Internet computers.  4551 children attended programs that encouraged them to become better readers. 838 adults attended an array of dynamic and vibrant cultural programming at the Carson library, all provided free of charge.

The library takes its role as a community center very seriously, we assist new residents with information about the City, we provide bilingual materials to serve the nearly 20% of the current population of persons of Hispanic or Latino origin.  We provide computers and Internet access to people who have no other access.

All over the country the public library is becoming know as the “third” place, the place beyond home and work where anyone is welcome. The future of the Carson City Library is very exciting; we welcome and embrace any opportunity to help make the City the best it can be.
